Cold sores and herpes outbreaks are painful and embarrassing. Try this helpful tip to stop painful herpes and cold sore outbreaks. As soon as you feel the tingling that precedes the outbreak apply DMSO directly to the area. In the case of cold sores around the mouth also apply DMSO to the back of the neck. This is where the virus is when it is dormant. For genital herpes also apply DMSO to the base of the spine around the tailbone.

Do this 3 times a day for up to 3 days and either the outbreak won’t happen at all or it will be very mild and short lived.

You can actually start the treatment anytime even when the outbreak is full blown. You will get immediate relief and it will heal much faster.

You can purchase DMSO creams in some health food stores. Online you can get it at www.jacoblab.com

Another successful trip to the dentist! For those who have not read my earlier posts, I was facing a toothless mouth from gum disease, bone loss and decay and completely turned things around very simply by taking calcium supplements, flossing, rinsing and cleaning between teeth twice a week with 1% hydrogen peroxide solution and brushing with Tooth Soap.

I have to say I was a bit worried this time. I’ve moved to a new city and it took me some time to settle the family and find a new dentist. I noticed something wasn’t right with a back molar and thought that I had a cavity. As it turned out, it was a broken amalgam filling which my new dentist replaced with a composite filling.

It’s been many more than 8 weeks and, although I got stuck somewhere in week 5, I’ve seen some good results with this program. I’ve added and increased a number foods like garlic, ginger, tofu and green tea. The walks have been harder to keep up in the winter with the cold, rainy and dark UK days, but I’m doing what I can. I have lost some weight (although I wasn’t trying to) and I have a lot more energy.

What has been life altering, are the breathing exercises and the introduction to Chinese Medicine. I have since had acupuncture and herbal treatment for menopause symptoms which has worked a dream and which I can recommend. I just went to one of those chinese doctors (a husband and wife team) in a shopping mall. They were fantastic.

I have also found a book called the ‘Complete System of Self Healing: Internal Exercises’ by Stephen T. Chang. I had heard the the eye exercises were very good. I’ve needed reading glasses for a while, but this year I’ve needed glasses for driving and my night vision is also getting worse. I’ve been doing the eye exercises for about 7 weeks. My eyes feel much better. The exercises are great for tired eyes, after work or after a long drive. You can even do them while driving. If I’ve had any improvement with my vision, it has been very subtle, but the book does say you need to do them for 3 to 6 months.

Complete System of Self Healing: Internal Exercises

I’m also doing a few of the other internal exercises. They work with Chinese concepts like meridians and chi (energy or life force). They are easy to do and fit well with Dr Weil’s program.

Dr Weil has an online program which I may start when the weather gets a bit better.

I was visiting family this month and one of my sisters was two weeks into Dr Weil’s 8 Weeks to Optimum Health. Over the following three weeks we spent together I saw her lose weight and literally begin to glow. Needless to say, I picked up a copy of Dr. Weil’s book and read it on the flight home.

The book is an excellent example of a sensible approach to healthy eating and living. Nothing new or ground breaking, but instead an approach that is easy to understand and follow. What I love about it is that it not about dieting. I have always believed that as soon as we start to diet and deprive ourselves of things we like to eat, we want them even more. What we resist persists!

Dr Weil promotes eating whole foods, getting moderate exercise and managing stress through breathing techniques. He also considers our spiritual side and suggests simple things like creating beautiful and orderly surroundings.

I’m in my first week and really enjoying it. What’s very different than what I have been doing over the last few years is his approach to supplementation. He doesn’t suggest taking high doses of supplements, but rather low to moderate doses based on research on how much our bodies are able to absorb.

He focuses heavily on cholesterol, but acknowledges a growing body of research showing that other factors such as triglycerides and inflamation are more likely to cause heart disease. He makes no mention of coconut oil or any other tropical oil, I suspect because they are saturated fats which he suggests keeping low (this is the one area where I disagree with him). I was very relieved to read his advice on poly-unsaturated vegetable oils – don’t eat them – throw them away and use olive oil instead.

Dr Weil is also a proponent of drinking filtered tap water for the same reasons we outline on out water page.

I’m looking forward to my eight weeks. The breathing exercises are a revelation and I am learning more about the power we have to heal ourselves.

I’m always looking for new ways to keep my skin healthy and radiant. Two months ago I ran out of my usual (and expensive) anti-oxidant day cream. Fearing I might dry up and blow away, I massaged a bit of organic coconut oil (what I use for cooking) onto my face and neck. I loved how my skin absorbed it right in so I thought I’d try a bit of an experiment and use it for two months. Wow, I will never go back to day creams! Coconut oil has softened my skin, made it clear, helps with wrinkles and contains no chemicals or additives. It’s amazing!

I knew coconut oil was a very healthy oil to eat, but I couldn’t imagine how much I would like it on my skin. Combined with a healthy diet, supplements and plenty of rest, coconut oil keeps skin healthy. It’s got antioxidant properties and antimicrobial properties to protect skin against sun and other environmental factors.

I now use coconut oil as a body lotion and I’ve just read that you can also use it as a pre-wash hair conditioner. I can’t wait to try it.

I still use Dermalift at night. It is simply the best anti-wrinkle cream I’ve come across.

Read our Coconut Oil page for more information in the health benefits of this wonderful oil.

Gum Disease and Tooth Decay – 3 Ways to Improve Dental Health and Reduce Your Risk of Heart Disease
By Dan Martin

Is your mouth trying to tell you something? Do your gums bleed? Do you have sensitive teeth? Are your teeth brittle? Do you have tooth decay despite regular brushing and flossing? Has your dentist noticed bone loss? Has a tooth fallen out?

The health of our mouths is an indicator of our overall health. If you have any of the above problems, you should be looking for the underlying causes. Proper regular brushing and flossing is important, but if it doesn’t resolve the problems, you need to do more. If you don’t, you could be increasing your risk of heart attack and stroke.

Bleeding gums and plaque bacteria, or periodontal disease, can increase the risk of a heart attack seven fold. Research has shown that the plaque bacteria found in the heart is the same bacteria found in the mouth. It is thought that the bacteria enters the bloodstream through bleeding gums. It then invades the blood vessel walls and causes atherosclerosis which can cause heart attacks and strokes.

The American Academy of Periodontology says that “it is thought that periodontal infections are related to increased plasma levels of inflammation such as C-reactive protein. C-reactive protein is now thought to be a stronger predictor of heart attacks that high cholesterol.”

If you have a history of heart disease in your family take a closer look at your family’s dental history. You may be surprised at what you find.

On top of regular brushing, the following these three steps will help you stop the cycle of tooth decay and periodontal disease.

Step 1 – Nutrition

Eat healthy food. Poor nutrition compromises the immune system making it harder for you fight off infections like periodontal disease. Make sure you get enough calcium. Getting enough calcium can significantly reduce periodontal disease, rebuild the enamel on your teeth making them less sensitive and susceptible to cavities and reduce bone loss by improving the bone density of the alveolar bone that supports your teeth. If you already have dental problems you will most likely need to take calcium supplements to turn things around. Try a daily dose of 800mg of calcium, 400mg of magnesium and 400iu of vitamin D3. This is an effective mix that supports absorption into your body. Try this for 3 to 4 months. You should notice a difference.

Step 2 – Cleaning

Use a Sonicare or any similar type of toothbrush. They stimulate and massage the gums far better than a manual toothbrush and are not harsh on tooth enamel. Alternatively, or additionally, use a soft toothbrush and brush with gentle circular movements. Use a light touch. Holding your toothbrush with two fingers (thumb and forefinger) will keep you from brushing too hard. Use natural non-abrasive toothpaste, preferably without glycerine. Glycerine may interfere with rebuilding enamel. It also leaves a slick film on your teeth making it difficult to feel if your teeth are clean. Floss once or twice daily using unwaxed dental floss. Glide is very easy to get in between close teeth. Use interdental brushes for cleaning pockets (the gaps between your teeth where the gums have receded). Food tends to get stuck in pockets and flossing doesn’t always get it out.

Step 3 – Hydrogen Peroxide

Clean with a 1% solution of hydrogen peroxide once or twice a week. The main cause of periodontal disease is bacterial plaque, a sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on your teeth. Hydrogen peroxide kills bacterial plaque and it also whitens your teeth. After regular brushing dip your toothbrush into the solution and brush it onto your teeth. Then dip your interdental brushes into the solution and get it into it your pockets. It will foam up when it comes in contact with bacteria. If you like mouthwash and find it helps you then continue using it. We find that the above regime, and in particular the use of hydrogen peroxide, is enough to maintain a healthy mouth.

Caution: You must dilute Hydrogen Peroxide to 1%. If you don’t you can burn your gums. If you buy a 3% solution, use 1 capful of Hydrogen Peroxide and 3 capfuls of water. If you buy 6%, use 1/2 capful to 3 capfuls of water. If you have any irritation, stop using it until the irritation goes away and try again using less or doing it less frequently.

Please visit your dentist and hygienist regularly.

Time for an update. It’s been 2 1/2 months since I started the eAntiAging skin care and I’m very happy with how my skin looks. There are noticeably less wrinkles, my skin is clear and looks younger. If your looking for anti-wrinkle skin care, look no further.

I’m currently taking collagen in the morning and applying Dermalift cream at night along side of my usual anti-oxidant skin care. I’ve got enough for another two weeks and then will only use the Dermalift Cream and resume the HGH releasing supplements that I was taking in the first month.
I’ve experienced no side effects, however, a friend who also tried the products had to stop the collagen because she felt it made her eyes sticky. She has continued with the cream alone and feels it is helping reduce wrinkles.

I feel I’ve had additional benefits from taking the collagen, but then I am older than my friend. If we have less collagen in our skin when we’re 50, then certainly we will have less collagen in our joints, muscles and eyes, too. Since I started the collagen, my frozen shoulder is gone, and my joints and muscles feel good. Not only have I had no problems with my eyes, I feel like they have improved slightly.

I can highly recommend these products from eAntiAging: Colla C, Dermalift and Somato 8. If you’re fifty or over, or even if you’re nearing fifty, it’s worth trying all three. If you’re younger, I suggest the Dermalift Cream.

Top health news on the BBC website today is an article about a research review by researchers in Copenhagen suggesting that vitamins A and E increased the rate of early death. The article is good. Go read it, but make sure you read the whole thing. Read how they carried out the review and how they selected the research to be included. First they took 68 trials, added them together to get a result that suggested that vitamins had no impact on the risk of early death. Then they took out 21 trials that they thought ‘had a slightly higher possibility of producing a skewed result’ and guess what…

the results the suggest that A and E may increase the risk of early death.

I have a lot of difficulty with this kind of research review:

There is no new research.

Trials can be cherry picked and results manipulated.

The trials may not be compatible or comparable – for example one trial may use healthy people and others may use ill people.

At the end of the BBC article there is a response from Dr Ann Walker of the Health Supplements Service who also thinks the study is “worthless” because some of the trials involved patients who were seriously ill.
“How sensible scientists can suggest that a modest intervention of a single antioxidant supplement, can have a major effect in reversing life-threatening pathology, where patients already have advanced cardiovascular disease, is ridiculous.

“Vitamin, mineral and dietary supplements not only have proven health benefits, they are essential to the maintenance of good health and can help bridge the nutritional gap for many people in the UK whose diets are often lacking in essential nutrients.”

It’s up to you to make an informed decision about your health.

I’m one of these vitamin gobbling baby boomers and I don’t need a scientist to tell me when something is working for me. Sure, I would like scientific evidence, however, I expect I would be toothless and in my grave before the scientific community got around to carrying out useful research on holistic health practice.

I don’t mean to be disrespectful to scientists. They do fantastic work and our quality of life would be utterly grim without them. Indeed, I would dead if it weren’t for antibiotics. However, while they are great at developing drugs to treat serious illness, they are not great at preventing ill health.

I went to the dentist last week for my six month check-up and he was very pleased indeed. It’s been 2 years since I began taking nutritional supplements and 2 years since I have had any tooth decay. The year before I began supplementing, I had a root canal, a number of fillings and I lost a molar because of bone loss. It all cost a fortune, and was a real pain.
I also had x-rays taken and we compared the bone where I had lost the molar. The bone loss had stopped. I can’t say how relieved I am about this. I was well on my way to losing more teeth and now I’m not.

My dentist said that plaque is a major cause of bone loss and remarked that I keep my teeth plaque free. I told him how I was using hydrogen peroxide to clean my pockets. He was stunned and added that it’s keeping them white, too.
Check out my dental page to find out how I take care of my teeth.
