Mouthwash recipe that costs just pennies! The best way to way to battle periodontal disease is to kill bacteria in your mouth. You do this by keeping your teeth clean by brushing with Tooth Soap, flossing, using inter-dental brushes and then rinsing with a mouthwash that kills bacteria including plaque bacteria. Most mouthwashes contain glycerin which may prevent your teeth from rebuilding enamel. These should be avoided. Few mouthwashes contain hydrogen peroxide which kills plaque bacteria. Read our Dental Care pages for information on how poor dental care can cause heart disease.

Good quality mouthwashes are expensive especially alcohol-free mouthwashes. You can make your own mouthwash for just pennies that works as well as, if not better than, anything you can buy!

Hydrogen Peroxide Mouthwash Recipe:

Dilute Hydrogen Peroxide to 1% – that’s it! You can add Mint extract for flavor or Tea Tree or Colloidal Silver for added protection. But really all you need is Hydrogen Peroxide and water.

How to dilute Hydrogen Peroxide to 1%

1 part 3% Hydrogen Peroxide to 3 parts water

or

1 part 6% Hydrogen Peroxide to 6 parts water

Use a 100ml squirt bottle for ease of use.

It is essential that you dilute Hydrogen Peroxide to 1% to avoid burning.

Now rinse! Swish the solution around your mouth for about 1 minute. It will foam up and get into those areas that are hard to clean. Do not swallow! Spit and rinse with a bit of water.

For more on how to care for your teeth visit our 7 Steps to Great Dental Health page.

And for the best toothpaste ever buy Tooth Soap. Better than any organic toothpaste brand.

Another successful trip to the dentist! For those who have not read my earlier posts, I was facing a toothless mouth from gum disease, bone loss and decay and completely turned things around very simply by taking calcium supplements, flossing, rinsing and cleaning between teeth twice a week with 1% hydrogen peroxide solution and brushing with Tooth Soap.

I have to say I was a bit worried this time. I’ve moved to a new city and it took me some time to settle the family and find a new dentist. I noticed something wasn’t right with a back molar and thought that I had a cavity. As it turned out, it was a broken amalgam filling which my new dentist replaced with a composite filling.

I’m one of the lucky ones in a fairly secure job on a decent wage, but with the current state of the economy, I save money where I can. I’m always amazed by the price differences in skin care. It’s very easy to get caught up in the marketing hype, after all, who doesn’t want perfect youthful wrinkle free skin forever? But, if you have a skin condition that is caused by something in your diet, even the most expensive skin creams won’t work. Read on for tips on how to take care of your skin and health and save money too!

Take a look at what you’re eating and cut out the junk, the processed food, the mystery meat, and the refined sugars and carbs. Read Dr. Weil’s books and website. Eat healthy, stay active, relax and enjoy life.

If you invest in your health by living a healthy lifestyle, you’ll look great, your skin will glow and you’ll save on fancy skin care products and doctor bills.

Another way to save money is to take care of your teeth. I’ve put quite a bit of information on this site about dental care. It’s based on how I have stopped boneloss, receding gums, brittle teeth, decay and hypersensitivity. For the past 3 years I have only had regular check ups with my dentist – no more gum treatments, root canals, fillings or extractions. More here…

Another great way to save money (and help the environment) is to stop buying bottled water. Get a water filter and enjoy the benefits of pure water on your health. I’ve saved a few old bottles in various sizes – I fill them up and have them with me when I’m out. More here…

Back to skin care… I was using coconut oil mixed with a bit of almond oil. Over time, I noticed my t-zone looking a bit unclear so I’m trying store products bought on sale, of course.

I still use coconut oil to massage around my eyes. It feels great and keeps the wrinkles away, which is just as much about the massage as it is about the oil! The massage technique is from the ‘Complete System of Self Healing: Internal Exercises’ by Stephen T. Chang.

Complete System of Self Healing: Internal Exercises

I do miss my Dermalift, but I feel better when I’m saving these days…

I went to the dentist last week and, once again, I had no cavities, no bone loss and my gums are healthy.

From 2003 to 2005, I began to have loads of problems with my mouth:

Hypersensivity – My teeth were so sensitive I had to take aspirin before eating.

Gum disease – receeding gums despite daily flossing and brushing.

Bone loss – I actually lost a tooth!

Decay – No matter how often I cleaned, or what I ate, I had decay every time I went to the dentist. I even had to have a root canal. My teeth had also become very brittle.

I was sure that I would be toothless in 10 years and I was paying loads of money in dental bills.

I started taking vitamins especially calcium and magnesium. Lots of calcium and magnesium! After about 3 months I noticed that my teeth were no longer sensitive. During these 3 months I began using Hydrogen Peroxide solution (1%) to rinse and clean in between my teeth, especially where the gums had receded. And then I discovered Tooth Soap and the education they provide with their products which supported what I was doing and provided me with a product that would support my regime.

Since I started taking care of my teeth and gums this way, I have not had a single cavity, my gums have stabilized and the bone loss has stopped (proven by my dentist’s x-rays!).

It took me years to figure this out. You can read everything I know for free here.

Big dental bills are a thing of the past for me. I now only pay for cleaning and a check up every 6 months.

Vitality Products make an amazing organic tooth soap. Visit their website and check out all the new flavors. They also have a selection of health products like their fantastic Coffee Butter Hand Cream.
Read these two testimonials from the Tooth Soap website:

“I really couldn’t tell you how long I have been using Tooth Soap®, but I will guess at about 8-9 months. Before using the tooth soap I had severe sensitivity and my gums were receding, slowly but too fast for my taste!! I can now eat ice cream or drink an iced drink without the sharp pains that would cause me to hesitate. My gums no longer “regularly” bleed while brushing or flossing and have a very healthy pink color to them…and I might add the receding has seemingly slowed to a halt. I battle hypothyroidism and fibromyalgia and I can attest to the reality that you can first and foremost “sense” your well being in your teeth. I am so very pleased with the Tooth Soap®, thank you!”

Is your mouth trying to tell you something? Do your gums bleed? Do you have sensitive teeth? Are your teeth brittle? Do you have tooth decay despite regular brushing and flossing? Has your dentist noticed bone loss? Has a tooth fallen out?

The health of our mouths is an indicator of our overall health. If you have any of the above problems, you should be looking for the underlying causes. Proper regular brushing and flossing is important, but if it doesn’t resolve the problems, you need to do more. If you don’t, you could be increasing your risk of heart attack and stroke.

Bleeding gums and plaque bacteria, or periodontal disease, can increase the risk of a heart attack seven fold. Research has shown that the plaque bacteria found in the heart is the same bacteria found in the mouth. It is thought that the bacteria enters the bloodstream through bleeding gums. It then invades the blood vessel walls and causes atherosclerosis which can cause heart attacks and strokes.

The American Academy of Periodontology says that “it is thought that periodontal infections are related to increased plasma levels of inflammation such as C-reactive protein. C-reactive protein is now thought to be a stronger predictor of heart attacks that high cholesterol.”

If you have a history of heart disease in your family take a closer look at your family’s dental history. You may be surprised at what you find.

On top of regular brushing, the following these three steps will help you stop the cycle of tooth decay and periodontal disease.

Step 1 – Nutrition

Eat healthy food. Poor nutrition compromises the immune system making it harder for you fight off infections like periodontal disease. Make sure you get enough calcium. Getting enough calcium can significantly reduce periodontal disease, rebuild the enamel on your teeth making them less sensitive and susceptible to cavities and reduce bone loss by improving the bone density of the alveolar bone that supports your teeth. If you already have dental problems you will most likely need to take calcium supplements to turn things around. Try a daily dose of 800mg of calcium, 400mg of magnesium and 400iu of vitamin D3. This is an effective mix that supports absorption into your body. Try this for 3 to 4 months. You should notice a difference.

Step 2 – Cleaning

Use a Sonicare or any similar type of toothbrush. They stimulate and massage the gums far better than a manual toothbrush and are not harsh on tooth enamel. Alternatively, or additionally, use a soft toothbrush and brush with gentle circular movements. Use a light touch. Holding your toothbrush with two fingers (thumb and forefinger) will keep you from brushing too hard. Use natural non-abrasive toothpaste, preferably without glycerine. Glycerine may interfere with rebuilding enamel. It also leaves a slick film on your teeth making it difficult to feel if your teeth are clean. Floss once or twice daily using unwaxed dental floss. Glide is very easy to get in between close teeth. Use interdental brushes for cleaning pockets (the gaps between your teeth where the gums have receded). Food tends to get stuck in pockets and flossing doesn’t always get it out.

Step 3 – Hydrogen Peroxide

Clean with a 1% solution of hydrogen peroxide once or twice a week. The main cause of periodontal disease is bacterial plaque, a sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on your teeth. Hydrogen peroxide kills bacterial plaque and it also whitens your teeth. After regular brushing dip your toothbrush into the solution and brush it onto your teeth. Then dip your interdental brushes into the solution and get it into it your pockets. It will foam up when it comes in contact with bacteria. If you like mouthwash and find it helps you then continue using it. We find that the above regime, and in particular the use of hydrogen peroxide, is enough to maintain a healthy mouth.

Caution: You must dilute Hydrogen Peroxide to 1%. If you don’t you can burn your gums. If you buy a 3% solution, use 1 capful of Hydrogen Peroxide and 3 capfuls of water. If you buy 6%, use 1/2 capful to 3 capfuls of water. If you have any irritation, stop using it until the irritation goes away and try again using less or doing it less frequently.

Please visit your dentist and hygienist regularly.

‘I am now using the Tooth Soap for the second week,
brushing 2 to 3 times daily. I no longer suffer from the
excruciating sensitivity to eating hot and cold foods at
the gum line! I am in awe and love the very very clean
feeling my mouth has after brushing. Thanks for a great
product.’ — Marion M., Registered Dental Hygienist
