Health, skin care and the Credit Crunch!

December 27th, 2008 · No Comments

I’m one of the lucky ones in a fairly secure job on a decent wage, but with the current state of the economy, I  save money where I can. I’m always amazed by the price differences in skin care. It’s very easy to get caught up in the marketing hype, after all, who doesn’t want perfect youthful wrinkle free skin forever? But, if you have a skin condition that is caused by something in your diet, even the most expensive skin creams won’t work. Read on for tips on how to take care of your skin and health and save money too! [Read more →]

Update - Dr Weil’s 8 Weeks to Optimum Health

December 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

It’s been many more than 8 weeks and, although I got stuck somewhere in week 5, I’ve seen some good results with this program. I’ve added and increased a number foods like garlic, ginger, tofu and green tea. The walks have been harder to keep up in the winter with the cold, rainy and dark UK days, but I’m doing what I can. I have lost some weight (although I wasn’t trying to) and I have a lot more energy.

What has been life altering, are the breathing exercises and the introduction to Chinese Medicine. I have since had acupuncture and herbal treatment for menopause symptoms which has worked a dream and which I can recommend. I just went to one of those chinese doctors (a husband and wife team) with a shopping mall. They were fantastic.

I have also found a book called the ‘Complete System of Self Healing: Internal Exercises’ by Stephen T. Chang. I had heard the the eye exercises were very good. I’ve needed reading glasses for a while, but this year I’ve needed glasses for driving and my night vision is also getting worse. I’ve been doing the eye exercises for about 7 weeks. My eyes feel much better. The exercises are great for tired eyes, after work or after a long drive. You can even do them while driving. If I’ve had any improvement with my vision, it has been very subtle, but the book does say you need to do them for 3 to 6 months.

Complete System of Self Healing: Internal Exercises

I’m also doing a few of the other internal exercises. They work with Chinese concepts like meridians and chi (energy or life force). They are easy to do and fit well with Dr Weil’s program.

Dr Weil has an online program which I may start when the weather gets a bit better.

Dr Weil’s 8 Weeks to Optimum Health

August 19th, 2008 · No Comments

I was visiting family this month and one of my sisters was two weeks into Dr Weil’s 8 Weeks to Optimum Health. Over the following three weeks we spent together I saw her lose weight and literally begin to glow. Needless to say, I picked up a copy of Dr. Weil’s book and read it on the flight home.

The book is an excellent example of a sensible approach to healthy eating and living. Nothing new or ground breaking, but instead an approach that is easy to understand and follow. What I love about it is that it not about dieting. I have always believed that as soon as we start to diet and deprive ourselves of things we like to eat, we want them even more. What we resist persists!

Dr Weil promotes eating whole foods, getting moderate exercise and managing stress through breathing techniques. He also considers our spiritual side and suggests simple things like creating beautiful and orderly surroundings.

I’m in my first week and really enjoying it. What’s very different than what I have been doing over the last few years is his approach to supplementation. He doesn’t suggest taking high doses of supplements, but rather low to moderate doses based on research on how much our bodies are able to absorb.

He focuses heavily on cholesterol, but acknowledges a growing body of research showing that other factors such as triglycerides and inflamation are more likely to cause heart disease. He makes no mention of coconut oil or any other tropical oil, I suspect because they are saturated fats which he suggests keeping low (this is the one area where I disagree with him). I was very relieved to read his advice on poly-unsaturated vegetable oils - don’t eat them - throw them away and use olive oil instead.

Dr Weil is also a proponent of drinking filtered tap water for the same reasons we outline on out water page.

I’m looking forward to my eight weeks. The breathing exercises are a revelation and I am learning more about the power we have to heal ourselves.

Skin Care and the Credit Crunch!

July 16th, 2008 · No Comments

Over the past six months we have seen prices of just about everything go up. If your like me you’ve been looking for ways to offset some of these rising costs. I’ve found cheaper insurance, I’ve been leaving the car at home and I’m shopping at the cheap grocery stores, buying bulk and taking advantage of sales. I’ve also changed my skin care regime! No more pricey lotions and potions. For the past two months I have used nothing but coconut oil mixed with a bit of almond oil on my skin.

I was worried that I would wrinkle up over night. But I haven’t. A few wrinkles do seem a bit more pronounced, but overall my skin looks great. Mixing coconut oil with almond oil is fantastic for my 50+ skin. It feels supple and even has a dewy look. I mix it in my hand and apply it to my face, neck, arms and hands.

It’s no fuss and very low cost.

When the crunch is over I go back to Dermalift and an antiaging skincare regime, but until then I’m very happy with the results of this completely natural and very inexpensive skin care.

Cansema for removing skin cancer - Update

April 19th, 2008 · No Comments

To recap, I put Cansema on a spot that I thought might just be an age spot, but that changed - sometimes it looked like a burn and sometimes it was dry with a small dark spot on it. I was worried that it was a skin cancer. I put Cansema on it and it formed a very sore scab which was close to falling off last time I posted.

On about the 12 day the scab fell off and left a very open sore which I kept clean and bandaged and which has now healed over. There is now a small scar about 1/3 the size of the original spot. The spot is completely gone.

The whole process seemed to take a very long time and it was quite painful in the first 8 days. I did take Ibuprofen a few times. But I am very pleased with the result. If it was a cancer, it’s gone. Next time I will definitely get a diagnosis from a doctor so that I will know for sure.

I highly recommend Cansema, but stress that a diagnosis is very important to get before hand.

No Cavities! Again!

March 30th, 2008 · No Comments

I went to the dentist last week and, once again, I had no cavities, no bone loss and my gums are healthy.

From 2003 to 2005, I began to have loads of problems with my mouth:

  • Hypersensivity - My teeth were so sensitive I had to take aspirin before eating.
  • Gum disease - receeding gums despite daily flossing and brushing.
  • Bone loss - I actually lost a tooth!
  • Decay - No matter how often I cleaned, or what I ate, I had decay every time I went to the dentist. I even had to have a root canal. My teeth had also become very brittle.

I was sure that I would be toothless in 10 years and I was paying loads of money in dental bills.

I started taking vitamins especially calcium and magnesium. Lots of calcium and magnesium! After about 3 months I noticed that my teeth were no longer sensitive. During these 3 months I began using Hydrogen Peroxide solution (1%) to rinse and clean in between my teeth, especially where the gums had receded. And then I discovered Tooth Soap and the education they provide with their products which supported what I was doing and provided me with a product that would support my regime.

Since I started taking care of my teeth and gums this way, I have not had a single cavity, my gums have stabilized and the bone loss has stopped (proven by my dentist’s x-rays!).

It took me years to figure this out. You can read everything I know for free here.

Big dental bills are a thing of the past for me. I now only pay for cleaning and a check up every 6 months.

Cansema for removing skin cancer

March 1st, 2008 · No Comments

I’ve had a brown spot on my right hand that appeared suddenly and would change from looking like a mild burn to a dry patch with a tiny dark spot and then back to a mild burn. It didn’t look like any of the skin cancer images I saw on the internet. It forgot to mention it to my GP last time I was in for a blood test. (The last time I pointed out a dry patch of skin, he paid no notice.) I had some Cansema from my father who had used it successfully on a number of skin cancers over the years and thought I would give it a try. Apparently, if you put it on healthy skin nothing much happens, but if you put it on cancerous tissue it will build a very sore scab that takes about 10 days to fall off (taking the cancer with it) leaving what looks like a hole in your skin which heals over. When I applied the Cansema, I really didn’t think anything would happen and was very surprised when the patch turned into a very sore scab. It’s almost 10 days and it’s close to falling off. I’ll post again when it’s all healed.

While I don’t recommend not getting checked by a doctor first, I’m very glad I gave this a try. I’ve had some bad sun exposure as a kid and have always worried a bit about skin cancer. I’m much less worried now!
